Planning tips

Things couples often forget

Feeding the people who work all day

Photographers, videographers and the DJ are often with you for eight hours or more. Ask your venue about meals for suppliers early, as it is often in their contracts.

Who looks after what on the day

Pick someone to hold the rings, someone to keep your phone, and someone to collect cards and gifts at the end. Put cash payments in labelled envelopes and hand them to the best man the day before.

The small rules that cause big problems

Check the venue's rules on confetti, candles and fixing things to the walls, and when you can get in to set up. Break in your shoes a few weeks before, and pack a small emergency kit.

Questions

Wedding Planning Checklist: common questions

When should you start planning a wedding?

Most couples start 12 to 18 months before. Bridebook's 2026 UK Wedding Report puts the average engagement at 23.8 months. If you have less time, enter your date and the checklist fits the early tasks into the time you have.

What should be on a wedding planning checklist?

The big three come first: your budget, guest numbers and date. Then the venue, the ceremony and giving legal notice, and the suppliers who can only be in one place on the day. After that come outfits, invitations, the seating plan and final checks with every supplier.

When do you give notice of marriage in the UK?

In England and Wales, at least 29 days before and no more than 12 months before. In Scotland, at least 29 days before, and forms usually can't go in more than 3 months ahead. In Northern Ireland, at least 28 days before. The checklist works out your dates.

How far ahead should you book a wedding DJ?

The checklist puts it 9 to 12 months before, after the venue and photographer. Saturdays go first, and May and August are the busiest months, so book sooner for those.

When should we send our wedding invitations?

Send save-the-dates around 9 months before and invitations about 2 to 3 months before. Ask for replies about a month before the day, so you have time for the seating plan.

Is my checklist saved, and can my partner see it?

It saves in this browser on this device. To share it, send your partner the share link, which carries the whole checklist inside it. Nothing is sent to Mobile Disco Network.

Tim’s tip

Lock in the date and venue first, then book the suppliers who can only be in one place on the day, such as the photographer and the DJ. Everything else can be planned around them.
