Where I’ve worked in Cambridge

Cambridge has some of the most beautiful party venues in the country, and some of the strictest. Stone college halls, riverside hotels and listed buildings all bring their own rules on sound, access and timings. Good DJ hire in Cambridge comes down to knowing those rules before you arrive, and that’s where 50 years of experience earns its keep.

At Addenbrooke’s Hospital I hosted a Boogie Bingo night for staff, with musical bingo, prizes and a disco to finish. I’ve run discos for care homes in Cambridge, and I’ve DJ’d a Christmas promotion for John Lewis & Partners Cambridge. For couples and party hosts, I’ve been recognised by Three Best Rated’s DJs in Cambridge listing (opens in a new tab) for 11 years in a row, after their 50-point inspection.

Cambridge venue guide: what DJ hire looks like at each type

Cambridge venues fall into four rough groups, and each one changes how I set up. These are venues I cover, with what to know about each kind.

College halls and gardens

Trinity Hall, Homerton, Downing, Corpus Christi, Queens’, Newnham and Madingley Hall all host private events. Stone walls and vaulted ceilings make sound bounce, so bass needs taming rather than turning up, and most halls have a sound limiter. Many colleges only take bookings from people with a university connection, so check that first.

City hotels

The University Arms, The Graduate, Hotel du Vin, DoubleTree by Hilton Cambridge City Centre, Hilton Cambridge City Centre, Clayton Hotel Cambridge and Quy Mill Hotel & Spa. Hotel function rooms usually share walls with bedrooms, so expect a limiter and a firm finish time, and ask where suppliers unload.

Country houses and barns

Swynford Manor, Longstowe Hall, South Farm, Bassmead Manor Barns, The Manor Barn, Burwash Manor, Island Hall, Minstrel Court, Rectory Farm and Histon Manor, mostly 20 to 30 minutes from the city. Barns and marquees are kinder on volume but often need power planning, so I check sockets and distances before the day.

One-off venues

IWM Duxford, Cambridge Guildhall, the Corn Exchange and Kettle’s Yard each have their own rules on set-up times, lighting and where equipment can go. These are the venues where an early conversation with the events team pays off most.

Still choosing between venues? My Cambridgeshire venue guide goes further afield, and the free venue comparison tool lets you weigh up capacity, cost and curfew side by side.

Noise limiters at Cambridge venues

If one thing catches couples out in Cambridge, it’s the noise limiter. Plenty of college halls, hotels and listed buildings have one, and it’s worth understanding before your big night.

How a limiter works

A small microphone on the wall measures the volume in the room. If the music stays above the venue’s set level for too long, the limiter cuts the power to the sockets the DJ is plugged into. The music stops, and on some systems it stays off for a minute or more.

What I do about it

I ask the venue for the limit and where the sensor is, then set up with that in mind: speakers pointed away from the sensor, the sound spread evenly instead of one loud corner, and the volume watched all night. A full dancefloor doesn’t need ear-splitting volume.

What to ask your venue

Ask whether there’s a limiter, what level it’s set to, whether it cuts the power, and what time music has to finish. Pass the answers to me, or let me ask the events team directly.

Planning the music around it

On a limiter, the order of songs matters more than the volume. I build the evening so the energy rises through the night, with requests from your guests by QR code, so the room feels loud without being loud.

Choosing a DJ in Cambridge: four things to check

There are plenty of DJs and agencies offering DJ hire in Cambridge. Whoever you book, these four questions tell you a lot about who you’re trusting with your night.

Who actually turns up?

Agencies often take your booking and send whichever DJ is free. Ask for the name of the person who will play, and whether you can speak to them before the day.

Can they send insurance and PAT certificates?

College and hotel events teams will ask. A professional DJ has them ready. I carry £10 million Public Liability Insurance, my kit is PAT tested every year, and the certificates are in your booking portal.

How do they handle a limiter?

If the answer is just “turn it down”, keep looking. You want the kind of planning described in the noise limiter section above.

A word from Tim Daymond

Cambridge venues reward a bit of homework. Before your night I'll talk to the venue about its limiter, access and finish time, so on the night all you notice is a full dancefloor. Every booking is mine from the first call to the last song.

DJ hire in Cambridge: your questions

Booking & prices

How much does DJ hire in Cambridge cost?

From £225 for a children’s party, £250 for a daytime or care home disco, £450 for a birthday party or Boogie Bingo night and £525 for a wedding, rising to £1,950 for the whole day. Your written quote covers your date, hours and venue.

Do I pay a deposit, and can I pay in instalments?

Yes and yes. A 45% deposit secures your date, and the rest can be spread over an interest-free payment plan. Everything is confirmed in writing.

Can I add a photo booth to a college or hotel booking?

Yes, space permitting. The Selfie Pod starts at £375, with a saving when you book it alongside a DJ package, and all the photos, videos and GIFs are digital, so there are no prints to queue for.

What does a Boogie Bingo staff party include?

The Afternoon Show is 3 hours from £450, the Bingo & Disco Mix is 4 hours from £650, and the Showstopper adds the photo booth over 5 hours from £1,250. Each one mixes musical bingo with a full disco.

Your venue & the night

Do you cover venues outside the city, like Duxford or Ely?

Yes. I cover the whole of Cambridgeshire, including IWM Duxford, the country house and barn venues south and west of the city, and Ely and the Fens to the north.

Will the music be family friendly?

Yes. My DJ software cuts swearing out of the tracks themselves, not just the requests, so grandparents and children can stay on the dancefloor all night.

Will you be the DJ on the day?

Always. I’ve never missed a booking or sent a stand-in, so your Cambridge event gets me in person.

Do you adapt the disco for care homes and sensory needs?

Yes. For care home residents or anyone who finds bright lights and loud music hard, Sensory-Friendly Disco Mode turns down the flashing, warns before visual effects and keeps parts of the room quieter, at no extra cost. Accessible discos.
