A Growing Trend
People Still Want To Dance
Daytime discos are genuinely on the rise across the UK. Age UK groups, community centres and private venues all report the same thing. People still want to dance; they just don't want a late night to do it. A retirement do, a tea dance, a 60th birthday or a regular community afternoon all work brilliantly in daylight hours.
The music is built around the room: 1950s and 60s classics, 70s and 80s favourites, or a broader decade mix. See the Retro Disco DJ Hire page for a full decade-by-decade breakdown. Volume and energy suit the actual guests in front of Tim, not a generic evening playlist turned down a notch.

Tim arrives and sets everything up well before guests arrive, so it's ready to go the moment your afternoon begins.
2 Guests arrive
A warm welcome as everyone settles in, with music at a gentle level while people get comfortable.
3 The main set
Music built around the room: the decades and pace that suit your actual guests. The energy builds naturally rather than being forced.
4 A proper break
On longer bookings, there's a natural pause partway through. The music goes down for a drink and a chat, then picks back up.
5 A gentle finish
The afternoon winds down at a sensible hour, with equipment cleared away quickly and without disruption.

Planning an Afternoon Party Your Guests Will Enjoy
Afternoon celebrations work best when the practical details are planned around the people attending. These points are worth thinking through before you confirm your date and venue.
Fit the timing around your guests' day
Think about when your guests naturally have the most energy. For many older guests, early afternoon after lunch works well. A later finish can clash with transport home, medication routines or the evening meal at a care home. If people rely on lifts, community transport or family to collect them, put a firm finish time on the invitation. For weekday bookings, check whether other groups use the building that day, as that can affect setup access and parking.
Make the room easy to enjoy
Plenty of seating close to the dance area matters more in the afternoon than at an evening party. Many guests will enjoy the music from their chairs as much as on their feet. Leave clear walkways for wheelchairs and walking frames, and keep bags and coats out of the way. Check that the route to the toilets is step-free and well lit. A quieter corner away from the speakers gives hearing-aid users somewhere comfortable to chat. Sunny rooms warm up quickly, so ask the venue about ventilation.
Gather song ideas in advance
Ask guests which songs they danced to when they were young. It's one of the simplest ways to get everyone involved. A request slip with the invitation, or a chat with residents or club members beforehand, often turns up surprise favourites. Note any special dedications, such as a retiring colleague's favourite record or a couple's wedding song. Then the moment can be planned rather than squeezed in. Songs tied to personal memories tend to bring quieter guests onto the floor.
Plan the refreshments and the break together
Afternoon parties usually centre on tea, cake and a light buffet rather than a full meal and a late bar. Decide when food will be served and share that timing in advance. The music can drop down while people eat and build back up afterwards. If someone is giving a speech or presenting a gift, choose a moment when everyone is seated, ideally just before the break. Keep water available throughout, especially in warm weather. Check whether the venue's kitchen staff need a fixed serving time.
From Tim
A word from Tim Daymond
I've been a DJ since 1976, and an afternoon party is just as much a proper party to me as a Saturday night. What changes is how I read the room. I think about which decades your guests love, how loud is comfortable, and when people will want a sit-down and a cup of tea. Booking for a care home or community group? The PLI, PAT and DBS paperwork is waiting in your login, so there's no chasing. Tell me a bit about who's coming, and I'll build the afternoon around them.
