1. Your guest numbers

Cake is usually served to everyone at the wedding breakfast, plus any evening guests who'll have a slice too.

2. Cutting style

This changes how many portions each tier gives you.

3. Cake style & budget

This sets the rough cost per portion — your baker's actual quote will depend on their pricing.

Questions

Wedding Cake Calculator: common questions

Who is the wedding cake calculator for?

It is for couples who want a rough idea of how big their wedding cake needs to be before speaking to a baker. Enter your day guests and any evening guests having cake, choose a slice size and cake style, and the tool shows the portions needed, a suggested number of tiers, the portions those tiers provide and an estimated cost.

What is the difference between wedding-style and party-style slices?

Wedding-style slices are smaller, tea-time portions and give the most servings per tier, which is the usual choice when cake is served with coffee. Party-style slices are bigger and dessert-sized, so each tier gives fewer portions and you will probably need more cake. Pick party-style if the cake is being served as the dessert.

Is anything I enter saved or sent?

No. Guest numbers and choices are worked out inside your browser and are not saved to your device's storage or sent to any server, so the form resets when you reload the page. Copy summary puts the result on your clipboard, and Email this draft to myself opens a draft in your own email app.

Should the wedding cake be served as dessert?

It can be, and it saves on a separate dessert course, but you will need larger, party-style portions and the cake needs cutting earlier in the day. Many couples cut the cake after the speeches for photos, then have it served later with coffee or put out with the evening buffet. Agree with your venue who cuts and serves it.

Tim’s tip

Agree with your venue who will cut and serve the cake after you have done the ceremonial first cut. Otherwise it can sit on its table for hours while everyone is dancing.
