Questions
Name Change Checklist: common questions
What is the name change checklist for?
It is for anyone changing their name after getting married in the UK. It lists the places that usually need updating, split into three tiers: identity documents first, then health, money and home records, then lower-priority things such as subscriptions and loyalty cards. Each item has a short note on what to do.
Why does the order matter?
Most organisations ask to see proof of your new name, usually your marriage certificate and often an updated passport or driving licence. Sorting those first means the rest go more smoothly. Order four or five certified copies of your marriage certificate from the register office, as some organisations keep the copy you send.
Does the checklist save my ticks?
No. The ticks are held only while the page is open and are not saved to your browser storage or sent anywhere, so they clear if you close or reload the page. To keep track over several weeks, use Copy my checklist to paste it into your notes, or Print it and tick items off by hand.
Do I have to change my name after the wedding?
No. In the UK there is no legal requirement to change your name when you marry. Some people take their partner's surname, some double-barrel, and others keep their own name for everything or just for work. If you are travelling soon after the wedding, make sure your booking matches the name on the passport you will travel with.
Tim’s tip
If your honeymoon is booked soon after the wedding, book your travel in the name on your current passport. Changing your passport just before you fly can leave you with mismatched documents.
