Questions

Buffet Food Label Maker: common questions

Who are these buffet labels for?

They suit anyone laying out a self-service table at a party, wedding evening, christening or work do, where guests help themselves and need to see what is in each dish. Each label shows the dish name, an optional description, vegetarian and vegan badges and the 14 UK allergens, so guests with allergies can check a dish without asking.

How do I print the labels so they stand up?

Download the print-ready PDF and print at Actual size or 100%, ideally on 200 to 250 gsm card. Standard labels fit four to an A4 sheet and large ones two. Cut along the grey lines and fold on the dotted line. Tick the both-sides option so guests on either side of the table can read the dish name.

Is my menu sent or saved anywhere?

No. The labels are drawn in your browser and the PDF and JPG files are created on your own device. The page does not send your dish list to any server and does not save it, so if you close or reload the tab you will need to type the dishes in again. Download the PDF before you leave the page.

How accurate do the allergen details need to be?

The labels are only as accurate as what you enter, so check every dish with whoever made it, including shop-bought items and sauces. Caterers, cafés and venue kitchens have a legal duty to give correct allergen information, and the page links to the Food Standards Agency guidance. Be careful with claims such as gluten free, which have their own rules.

Tim’s tip

Put the buffet somewhere guests can queue without standing on the dancefloor or blocking the route to the bar. A short gap after the food is served also gives everyone time to eat before the dancing picks up.
