Questions
What Was Number One: common questions
What can I use the Number One finder for?
It is for couples looking for a song with a personal link to their story. Enter your wedding date and, if you like, the day you met, and the tool shows the UK Number One single for the week of each date. Many couples use one of the songs as a first dance, a surprise song in the evening or a talking point on the tables.
How far back do the chart records go?
The chart history starts in November 1952, when the UK Singles Chart began, and runs up to the most recent week held in the tool. For a date before November 1952 you will see a note that it is before the records begin. For a date after the latest week held, the tool shows the most recent Number One it has instead of an exact match.
Are the dates I enter saved or sent anywhere?
No. The chart data is built into the page, so the lookup happens inside your browser without contacting a server, and nothing is saved to your device's storage. Copy my results puts the songs on your clipboard. Email my partner opens a pre-written draft in your own email app, and nothing is sent unless you send it.
What if our Number One is not a good first dance song?
Not every chart-topper suits a slow dance. You could use it as a surprise track later in the evening, for your entrance or for the cake cutting instead. Another option is to look at the song from the day you met, or ask your DJ to slip it into the set at a moment that suits it.
Tim’s tip
If your Number One is not right for a first dance, ask your DJ to play it at another moment, such as your entrance or the cake cutting. It still gets the reaction, without having to dance to it.
