How to hire a DJ: 22 mistakes to avoid
Here's how to hire a DJ without regrets. These are the 22 mistakes Tim sees most often, and what to check before you pay anyone.
Tim’s tip: Talk to your DJ before you book. Ten minutes on the phone tells you more than any advert.

Hiring a DJ: Mistakes to Avoid: your questions
Mistake 1: Booking a DJ on price alone
The cheapest quote often means no insurance, no backup equipment and no plan for your night.
Compare what's included, not just the total: hours, set-up, lighting, insurance, a contract and how the DJ plans your music. Ask what happens if something breaks.
Mistake 2: Waiting too long to book
Good DJs get booked 12 to 18 months ahead for summer Saturdays and December.
Leave it late and you choose from whoever's left. Check your date as soon as you have your venue.
Mistake 3: Hiring a friend with decks
A friend means well, but they'll want to enjoy the party too.
They rarely have insurance, PAT-tested equipment, backup kit or experience reading a mixed-age crowd. If anything goes wrong, it's awkward to say so. A professional keeps the night on track so you can relax.
Mistake 4: Not getting a written contract
Without a contract you have nothing to rely on if times, prices or plans change.
A proper contract sets out your date, hours, package, payments and cancellation terms. Every booking with Tim has a written contract you sign online.
Mistake 5: Ignoring public liability insurance
Most venues won't let a DJ set up without public liability insurance and PAT certificates.
If someone trips over a cable, insurance protects you, your guests and the venue. Ask to see the certificate. Tim's £10M certificate is in your client portal.
Mistake 6: Forgetting the Do Not Play list
Everyone has a song they can't stand, or one that brings back the wrong memories.
Write it down before the day. A Do Not Play list stops it being played, even if a guest asks for it.
Mistake 7: Planning every single song
A list of 200 must-plays leaves the DJ no room to react to the dance floor.
Pick your key moments and a handful of favourites, then let the DJ read the room. That's how the floor stays full.
Mistake 8: Not talking to the DJ before the day
If you've never spoken to your DJ, you don't know who'll turn up or how they'll run your night.
Talk through your timings, music and announcements beforehand. With Tim, you deal with him from the first enquiry to the last song.
Mistake 9: Assuming every DJ is a good MC
Announcing the speeches, the cake and the first dance is a skill of its own.
Ask whether your DJ will act as MC, and how. A clear, confident voice keeps the day running on time.
Mistake 10: Not asking about backup equipment
Equipment can fail, so ask what the DJ carries as a spare.
Tim brings a full matching backup sound system to every booking, so a fault never stops the music.
Mistake 11: Overlooking the venue's sound limiter
Many venues have a limiter that cuts the power if the music gets too loud.
An inexperienced DJ can trip it again and again. Ask your venue about it, and choose a DJ who knows how to set up around it.
Mistake 12: Putting the bar far from the dance floor
If the bar is in another room, half your guests will stay there.
Ask your venue to keep the bar and dance floor close together, so people move between them.
Mistake 13: Forgetting the room turnaround
Many venues clear the wedding breakfast tables before the evening.
Plan what guests do while that happens, and make sure the DJ has time to set up without getting in the way.
Mistake 14: Forgetting about lighting
Sound is only half of it.
Good lighting turns a function room into a party, and uplighting can transform a plain venue. Ask what lighting comes with your package.
Mistake 15: Ignoring the age range of your guests
Your guests might range from 8 to 80.
A DJ who only plays one decade will empty the floor. Choose someone with a wide music library who knows how to mix the generations.
Mistake 16: Not asking about extra costs
Ask what isn't included: travel, set-up time, overtime, lighting, microphones.
Tim's packages show the full price up front, with travel in the four counties included.
Mistake 17: Not checking recent reviews
Look for recent reviews from real clients, not just a few old ones.
Independent places, such as Google and the Norfolk Trusted Trader site, are harder to fake.
Mistake 18: Assuming one set-up suits every venue
A village hall, a marquee and a hotel ballroom all need different sound and lighting.
Ask how the DJ adapts their equipment to your room.
Mistake 19: Not choosing a first dance song in advance
Tell your DJ your first dance song, and the exact version, well before the day.
Tim asks for it in your playlist form so he has the best-quality copy ready.
Mistake 20: Forgetting to feed your DJ
An all-day DJ can be working for 10 to 12 hours.
Agree with your caterer whether a hot meal is included, and when they'll get a break.
Mistake 21: Poor communication before the day
Most problems on the night start with something nobody mentioned.
Share your timings, venue rules and special requests early, and keep one person as the contact on the day.
Mistake 22: Not researching your DJ properly
Check insurance, reviews, contracts and memberships before you pay a deposit.
Tim's Trading Standards approval means he has already been independently vetted.
