Planning tips
Making a toast work on the night
Keep it short
Two to four minutes is plenty for a birthday or anniversary toast. At a comfortable pace that is roughly 250 to 500 words. Paste your finished words into the speech timer to check the length before the day.
Plan the moment
Agree with the host and the DJ when the toast will happen, ideally when everyone is seated or just before the cake. Ask for the music to come down and a microphone, so the back of the room hears every word.
Practise out loud
Read it aloud two or three times, and mark where to pause for laughs and where to raise a glass. If you would rather not hold paper, the speech teleprompter scrolls your words on a phone or tablet at your pace.
Tim’s tip
Read the finished speech out loud and time it before the day. Keep it short enough that guests are still listening at the end, and agree with your DJ who will hand you the microphone.
