Planning tips
What every party invitation should include
The essentials
Who the party is for, what you are celebrating, the date, a start and finish time, and the full venue address with postcode. Add how and by when to reply, and a phone number for anyone who prefers to call. A finish time helps guests book taxis and babysitters.
When to send it
Send invitations four to six weeks ahead for a milestone birthday or anniversary, and two to three weeks ahead for a children's party. Over a bank holiday or in December, add a week or two, as diaries fill up fast.
Surprise parties and gifts
For a surprise party, say so clearly on the invitation and give a time to arrive before the guest of honour. If you would rather people didn't bring presents, a light line such as “Your company is the only gift needed” avoids awkwardness. Once replies come in, track them with the party guest tracker.
Tim’s tip
Put a finish time on the invitation as well as a start time. Guests plan lifts and babysitters around it, and it helps everyone stay for the last dance rather than drifting off early.
