Tim Daymond, Tinsel Tim

Good wedding reception games ideas help two families become one happy crowd. I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a DJ since 1976. In my experience, the right game at the right moment completely transforms the atmosphere.

So below you’ll find the games that consistently work, plus exactly when to schedule them. I’ve also included free tools to help you prepare everything beforehand.

Why Wedding Reception Games Ideas Work So Well

Many couples worry about quiet gaps, especially between the meal and the evening party. Therefore, a short game fills that time with laughter instead of waiting around.

Games also encourage different groups of guests to mix naturally. For example, your university friends end up teaming with your grandparents. As a result, the dance floor usually fills much faster afterwards.

Classic Wedding Reception Games Ideas

The Shoe Game. The couple sit back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner’s. Then I read out questions, and they raise the matching shoe. It always produces plenty of laughter, because the answers rarely match.

Couple Trivia. Reception trivia tests how well guests really know you both. For example, I ask about your first date, your holidays and your funniest habits. You simply send me the questions and inside jokes beforehand through your online portal.

Identify the Knee. This silly game suits every generation. Brave volunteers roll up their trousers behind a sheet. Then the bride or groom must identify the knee that belongs to their partner. Naturally, the whole room joins in with the guessing.

Outdoor Wedding Reception Games Ideas

Summer weddings in Norfolk and Suffolk often include long drinks receptions outdoors. So lawn games keep guests entertained while the photographer works with your family.

  • Giant Jenga and giant dominoes
  • Croquet or quoits on the lawn
  • A photo booth challenge with silly poses

You can usually hire or borrow lawn games locally, or ask your venue what they have. Meanwhile, my selfie pod can host a photo booth challenge, with guests copying funny poses. Read more in my guide to wedding photo booth ideas.

Evening Favourites and Traditions

Boogie Bingo is my musical bingo game show. Instead of numbers, guests listen for songs and mark them off their cards. Above all, it works brilliantly for mixed ages, because everybody knows some of the music.

Traditional moments still matter too. For instance, I can introduce the bouquet toss with music and a proper announcement. Similarly, I cue the garter toss, so your photographer is always ready.

You can add Boogie Bingo to your package alongside your wedding DJ hire. Also, the Ultimate Showstopper package at £1,950 already includes a round.

When to Schedule Each Game

Timing makes a huge difference to how games feel. So I usually suggest this simple order.

  1. Drinks reception: giant Jenga and lawn games while photographs happen.
  2. After the meal: a couple quiz or trivia, lasting ten to twenty minutes.
  3. Before the first dance: a quick bouquet toss to build excitement.
  4. Mid-evening: Boogie Bingo, giving dancers a welcome breather.

Making Games Feel Relaxed, Not Forced

Nobody enjoys being dragged on stage. That’s why I always ask for volunteers and keep every game light.

Tim’s tip: keep each game short and lively. Guests always prefer leaving wanting more.

I host the games myself with radio microphones, so every guest hears clearly. Also, I’m Trading Standards Approved and fully insured, so you can relax completely.
